A Dream of Mine… in miniature

When I was a child, there was one thing I always knew would be fun, and would help me feel better.  That was working on my models… cars, airplanes, and ships.  But mostly ships.  Working on them created a now lost sense of mental peace.

The problem is there are too many other things that intrude.  I can not sustain it.

The vast majority of those interruptions come from my own mind.  Things have to be just-right for my mind to be able to move on with my own creative thoughts.  They keep coming back though.  I will gradually fade…

And on top of that there is the outside world… and by that I mean outside our home.  I can not escape it any more easily as anyone else.  But I wish I could.  I wish I could pick and choose what I will pay attention to… what will actually matter to me.  I find my mind “sucked” into the News world.  And I can lose hours in it.  I would like to live in a bubble.  It is a dream.

What I do is creative.  I make things.  And there is art in the making of them.  Is it not as productive as reading a book?  Somehow that seems more acceptable.  “Go read a book.”  But it is still a hobby that does not change the world.  It is to make the world an easier place to live in.  We have to escape… everyone…

And I need to spend a large part of the rest of my life living like this.  I do not have that much left.  I will take care of my friends, and I will narrow my interests elsewhere.  I would do this if I could.  The real world still demands so much…

Where is the balance?  How much time is my own?  How much do I owe elsewhere?

I do not know.  How much can I play?

My Next Trip on My Own

Tomorrow I am supposed to go off on my second trip by myself.  But I am fighting depression today, and everything is in doubt.

It would be an especially good time to go, because Lori would like to rattle around the house by herself for a couple of days.  And I sure could use the relaxation.  So far this morning I have had to deal with some issues over the phone… neither is yet resolved.  So more effort will have to go there as well.

These may seem little things.  But they can turn my life from one way to another.  I need to get away from the constant anxiety of home.  I love it here – this is my sanctuary.  But even the best place can get to be too stressful.  I am sure we all know how that feels.

I am not sure how this will go.  I do not have much of a plan for today.  There are things that need to be done, and I will have to find ways to do them.

I hate days like this…

I live in a Different Place… and People Just Roll Their Eyes

How the world affects me is different than how it affects most people.  This is especially true in personal relationships.  Those of us with manageable mental illnesses, all know what it is to deal with “normal” people.  They will not understand… we have to learn to “respond” to them as they would expect.  It is not our true nature… but it is an acceptable response.  And if we do not learn this well… we end of failing – on the streets, or in the jails.  We fall thru the cracks.

I could very easily see myself as a homeless person.  I have even thought that it would be a much simpler life.  There would be so much less noise.  But it is a solution to nothing.

As we get closer to people, we have to slowly unroll the internal turmoil that is us.  We have spent our entire lives learning to fit into their world, and now we have to ask someone into ours.  When we get close to some-one, we need for them to learn how to live in our world – or at least to understand what it is like.  Lori has done that… but there are so many others…

I spent 20 years learning to fit in before I began my professional life.  I learned how to hide my internal struggle so well that I would forget about it at times… I would go on autopilot, and not even recognize my own feelings.  I have no doubts, that others noticed the odd little things from time to time.  Even my mother saw it.

But there was never enough to open the door.

Fooling Little Experiments in Life

We all try things from time to time, where we later think, “What the Hell was I thinking?”  I do that a lot.  And then I wonder why I keep trying.

But I do keep trying. 

The biggest problem I have, is that I usually can’t figure out what was wrong with my thinking!  When it comes to issues involving other people, I do not understand what to think.  I seem to be wrong about how people will react, and what they will think, virtually always.  I get it wrong.

This, above all else, has pushed my into seclusion.  Of course… there are the anxieties, phobias, and depressive episodes as well… so it is hard to say what has caused the most problems.  I just don’t have the energy to keep pushing anymore.

So I carefully plan out my efforts.  The slightest things going wrong can force to to quit.  I crash out and retreat into myself, and my home.  I can not predict how things will go, no matter how careful I am.

There are times when I want to completely give up.  That does not work either.  I must have some contact.  So I keep trying.

A Very Weak Week

The last few days have been very trying.  It sort of started when I missed the Super Bowl, and things went downhill from there.  Everything I try to do to meet people, or go out, or be in contact with people, has blown up in my face.  The only things I can do, are alone.

What I am seeing is more isolation ahead.  I can at least go to a nice secluded place to get away… but as far as people are concerned, my life has gone even farther from having any friends.  I just need to stay home.  No-one will ever be better off for knowing me.

I am working on getting my office all finished up – I have made very good progress.  I can be comfortable here, by myself.  I have my hobbies.  But at the same time, I know I will have to make this pretty much my entire world.  There is nothing else.

My mind has been degraded.  I simply do not care as much anymore.  There is not so much to care about.  And it is clear, I can not think the way everyone else does.  I can not make a life with other people in it.  The only thing that works for me, is to be alone.

Just ask anyone… I am crazy.  I am weird, and unpredictable.  I am not a good friend.  I am best forgotten.

Monday… Need I Say More?

Starting a new week is not so hard for me.  I am tired from stress, but I do feel as if the week carries a new alternative.  I could get off to a good start, and do more.

I have been working around the house more the last few months… trying to build more of a routine.  I think it has gone pretty well.  I have not made near as much progress on my own things – hobbies etc.  That does include a lot of projects for the house as well.  I have a wood and metal  shop in the garage… so I can make things.

I is difficult to get started.  I am still working on getting past that initial mountain of anxiety.  At the start of the day, it is hard to see the rewards… at least enough rewards to make it worth the effort.  Starting is my biggest struggle at times.  Like now.

Over the last couple of months, I have made some efforts to get out more… I have gone on a trip by myself!  My biggest disappointment has been attempts to go out for lunch… beer… or whatever with other people.

When I work on plans to get out more, things become very limited.  I can go shopping, and on photo trips.  But there is no-one to do other things with, so there are not a lot of choices.  I suppose it’s all for the best – I do better staying home.  So I am trying to think of more things I can do by myself.

This is all a matter of reorienting my life – at least parts of it.  Sometimes it seems too late for all that… we will see.

Depression… It Never Quite Goes Away

This week has tested my limits – and the limits are still there.  Depression is always lurking around the edges of my life.  Some weeks make it almost inevitable.  This was one of them.

Monday and Tuesday were horrible difficult.  And issues all week never gave me a break.  I was alone to deal… or at least to try.  And this week it got to be way too much.  But I still had to go on.  Even this morning, I had to get up and do what I do every morning.  There are things to take care of.

Once I am done, I will go back to bed, and hope the world will go away.  Nice.

Trip the Rain Fantastic

It was wet in Newport when I was there last week.  That was just fine… I was there to relax, and read, and eat some fun foods.  I was able to sit and watch the rain and wind on the beach – the waves were big and loud.  It was relaxing.

A lot of planning and preparation went into this trip… and I think it paid off.  I am tired, and a bit drained from going, but that seems like a pretty good thing since it was my first trip alone.  I am going back next month.

So I can’t go to the grocery store, but I can drive out to the coast for a couple of nights.  Interesting.  I have always liked the Silvia Beach Hotel, since the first time Lori convinced me to go there a couple years back.  People pretty much leave you alone to read, or just look at the view – no TVs, radios, wi-fi, or any such.  I have been in all the little shops, and I liked the Pub and Bakery.

The idea of going there alone goes back more than a year.  My readers will know that last year was a bit unsettling at times… but I never lost the hope of going to Newport alone.

I paid attention to where things were, and how things felt.  I gradually built a plan.  I had enough time to slowly figure out what I would do, and where I would go.  There is the Pub, which is right down the street, and has foods, and ales I like.  There is a fantastic Wine store where the owner knows what I like.  And the hotel itself, it calm, quiet, and comfortable.  So I planned…

I think it paid off.  Though there were moments when I wanted to give up and run home, I had a very nice day Thursday – I read a book and a half.  The evenings were the hardest – as they are at home.  It was more work than I had hoped, but went better than I had expected.  That is very good.

I still have a lot to think about… but I am going to be ready to go again, and it should get easier each time.

Separating Behavior from Thought… a difficult battle for those few who find the need to Define Themselves to Themselves.

When you are depressed you loose the ability to intellectually… do anything.  That is not an option.  But we still feel the emotional side… and there is also our philosophical side – it may be our religion, or any philosophical concept of existence.

You become a captive held away from the World.  Depression takes away our ability to defend ourselves.  So we hide.  We run away.  We will do anything to avoid the ___ that comes at us.  And each of us has our own Structure of Fear… the things we need to avoid.  No-one can point to any example of how they feel, because there are no examples… everyone is different. 

There is nowhere to point your finger.  So to most people, what you say is little more than fantasy.  You know the feeling… when something so deeply within you, is smiled upon as a passing fancy by those you share it with.  What becomes important to us, is but trivia to them…

Back-Up Plans… Not Mine…

People have back-up plans for things that are important.  But I am not writing here about normal kinds of back-ups… it is the people who know me.

When I say I will try to go out, people come up with other plans for when I crash out, and can’t go.  I know they are just being “realistic”.  I get that.  But it shows me that no-one really expects me to be able to  follow thru.  I tend to think everyone just assumes the “back-up” plans are actually the “real” plans.  I may be wrong… but that is how I feel!

It takes away my energy, and desire to even try.  I am a failure before I start the day.  And it hurts me to my core.  This is the attitude that finally drove me away from Facebook.  That is not what friends do.  Friends stand behind you, and encourage you no matter what has happened.

I understand that over the decades, I have earned a bad reputation for not following thru.  I guess I have earned that.  But how much of it has been self-fulfilling?  There have been many times when in the face of doubters, I just give up – why put out all the effort when everyone thinks it’s hopeless anyway?  Why do things with people who expect me to cancel??

Today (New Year’s Eve) I am fighting this very problem.  Now I think I will not go out this evening.  All the energy and desire to go have evaporated.  Why bother trying?

Trying takes a lot of effort.  And I have to plan it very carefully.  The effort last all day, or even several days while I am getting ready.  It takes a major commitment.  And it is no longer important enough for me to even try.

People will end up having more fun if I just stay home.  Then they can do what they want, and leave me to myself.  That is what happens most of the time.  Everyone seems to like it this way best.

Biggest Cause of Anxiety…

Things that should happen but might not.

It seems so simple…   And…   Sadly…   It is…

When people you know are suffering from very high anxiety, the best thing you can do is to just go on as if everything was normal.  The anxiety is probably about a fear of things not going the way they should.

So just keep swimming… just keep swimming…

I Know What I Should by Writing About.

I should write about my plans, and my progress.  And the plans still look good, and there is still progress.  Things will get better.

But my mind is not there.

I do not want to be here right now.  I wish I could sleep for 3 days, and everyone else could do what they want.  I am staying home for Christmas… no-one is coming over.  I can not deal with the whole Christmas thing now.  There is no joy in it for me… I just wish it was over!

So my thoughts are now about trying to get thru the next few days without ruining things even more than I already have.  Everyone blames me for things falling apart – that is fair.  It is my fault.  I just want to more on to things I can actually improve.

So I will go on now… and try to survive it all.
